Emely Taveras
is a queer, disabled, first-generation Dominican American writer exploring chronic illness, sexual identity, and familial trauma. A wedding photographer turned writer and painter, she collects fragments of peace through pen, lens, and brush. She loves books, loud feelings, and talking about the hometown she escaped.
Emely’s short story “Paloma” won Peatsmoke Journal's 2025 Editor's Prize in Fiction. Her work has been published in The Branches Journal, Peatsmoke Journal, The Bloomin' Onion, and ExPat Press. She was awarded a Lambda Literary 2026 Emerging Writers Retreat fellowship and received multiple writerships from the Lighthouse Writers Workshop. She holds a B.A. in English Writing from Kean University and is currently an MFA Fellow in Fiction at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
